MOS 98D Emitter Locator/Identifier

a. Major duties.

(1) MOSC 98D1O. Operates radio DF/SSL equipment and employs EID to recognize, identify, and locate foreign radio transmitters. Performs electronic support measures (ESM) for EW operations. Coordinates DF/EID activities with intercept and analysis section. Operates electronic data processing (EDP) communications equipment. Prepares and maintains DF/EID logs and files and prepares reports on mission results.

(2) MOSC 98D2O. Analyzes information obtained from the use of DF/SSL equipment and EID. Evaluates location results of target transmitters. Forwards target information to DF net for prosecution of DF request. Employs SIGINT/EW tasking to determine flash order of target signals. Calculates composite DF plots and performs accuracy studies. Performs wave form analysis on target transmitters. Integrates DF and EID results. Maintains DF/EID statistical data and maintains technical databases. Provides technical guidance to lower grade soldiers.

(3) MOSC 98D3O. Supervises emitter locator/identifier employment and activities. Develops and implements SIGINT/EW emergency plans. Inspects equipment for placement, alignment, and orientation. Prepares and controls the quality of DF/EID reports. Provides technical guidance to lower grade soldiers.

(4) MOSC 98D4O. Supervises emitter locator/identifier elements at the platoon/detachment level. Establishes and maintains DF sites. Interprets, implements, and recommends adjustments to SIGINT/ EW tasking. Provides technical guidance to lower grade soldiers.

(5) MOSC 98C5O. Performs duties shown in preceding skill level and provides guidance to subordinate soldiers. Supervises immediate subordinates in SIGINT analysis, reporting, and processing operations and provides appraisals of intelligence products, activities and operations. Develops unit intelligence training strategy.

b. Physical demands rating and qualifications for initial award of MOS.

SIGINT/EW emitter locator/identifiers must possess the following qualifications:

(1) A physical demands rating of moderately heavy.
(2) A physical profile of 222121.
(3) Normal color vision.
(4) A minimum score of 95 in aptitude area ST.
(5) The soldier must meet TOP SECRET security clearance and Sensitive Compartmented Information (SC) access eligibility requirements.
(6) Meet hearing acuity test standards per AR 40-501.
(7) A qualifying score on the Audio Perception Test.
(8) A high school graduate or equivalent.
(9) Never been a member of the U.S. Peace Corps, except as specified in AR 614-200, chapter 1.
(10) No information in Provost Marshal, intelligence, military personnel records jacket, or medical records which would prevent the granting of a security clearance under AR 380-67.
(11) No record of conviction by court-martial.
(12) No record of conviction by a civil court for any offense other than minor traffic violations.
(13) The soldier must be a U.S. citizen.

(a) Soldier and spouse must not have immediate family members who reside in a country within whose boundaries physical or mental coercion is known to be a common practice, either against-

(b) Persons accused of or acting in the interest of the United States.

(c) The relatives of such persons to whom they may reasonably be considered to be bound by ties of affection, kinship, or obligation. Near relatives will also include uncles, aunts, grandparents, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and relationships corresponding to any of the above persons in loco parentis.

(14) Have neither commercial nor vested interest in a country within whose boundaries physical or mental coercion is known to be a common practice against persons acting in the interest of the U.S. This requirement applies to the soldier’s spouse as well.
(15) Meet career management and development criteria contained in AR 614-200.
(16) Formal training (completion of MOS 98D course under the auspices of the USAICS) mandatory.

c. Additional skill identifiers.

(1) P5-Master Fitness Trainer.
(2) 2S-Battle Staff Operations (skill level 3 and above).
(3) 4A-Reclassification Training.
