MOS 55D Explosive Ordnance Disposal

Locates, identifies, renders safe, and disposes of foreign and domestic conventional, chemical, or nuclear ordnance and improved explosive devices (IED); supports VIP missions for the U.S. Secret Service, State Department, and other Federal agencies. Duties for MOS 55D at each level of skill are:

a. Major duties.

(1) MOSC 55D10. Researches and identifies ordnance using EOD technical publications. Detects the presence of and identifies chemical agents. Prepares and maintains EOD tools, equipment, and vehicles. Assists in operating an Emergency Contamination Control Station (ECCS) and Emergency Personnel Decontamination Station (EPDS). Assists in locating and gaining access to buried ordnance. Assists the EOD Team Leader in performing the major duties.

(2) MOSC 55D2O. Performs duties in the preceding grade level. Supervises and provides technical guidance to less experience soldiers. Performs radiological monitoring. Reads and interprets x-rays, diagrams, drawings, and other technical information on explosive ordnance. Conducts formal instruction to military and civilian audiences. Assists with the administrative duties necessary to support unit operations. Assists in preparing technical intelligence and incident reports.

(3) MOSC 55D3O. Performs duties in the preceding grade levels. Performs or supervises render safe and disposal procedures on conventional, chemical, and improvised explosive devices. Develops new render safe and disposal procedures when none in existent or modifies existing procedures to adapt to new situations. Supervises transportation and storage of explosives and unexploded ordnance. Supervises operation of the ECCS and EPDS. Advises commanders on precautions and actions necessary when unexploded ordnance is located in their area of operation. Prepares technical intelligence and incident reports. Advises military and civilian agencies on disposition of hazardous materials and searching techniques for improvised explosive devices. Performs administrative and supervisory functions in maintenance, security, supply and training management. Procedures when none exists or modifies existing procedures to adapt to new situations. Supervises transportation and storage of explosives and unexploded ordnance. Supervises operation of ECCS and EPDS. Advises commanders on precautions and actions necessary when unexploded ordnance is located in their areas. Prepares technical intelligence and incident reports. Advises military and civilian agencies on disposition of hazardous materials and searching techniques for improvised explosive devices. Performs administrative and supervisory functions in maintenance, security, supply and training management.

(4) MOSC 55D4O. Performs duties in the preceding grade levels. Directs and supervises EOD range and area clearance operations. Directs disposal operations for conventional and chemical munitions. Coordinates EOD operations with Chemical Accident/Incident Response Officer (CAIRO). Performs and maintains liaison with supported units and civil and federal law enforcement agencies. Assists in planning, coordination, and execution of unit operations and movements. Assists in preparation of operation orders and standard operating procedures. Consolidates, edits, and reviews reports.

(5) MOSC 55D5O. Performs duties in the preceding grade levels. Responsible for maintaining continuity of all unit operations and movements. Supervises coordination and deployment of EOD response teams over a wide geographical area. Supervises establishment and maintenance of situation maps, journals, and technical intelligence reports. Technical advisor at staff levels. Supervises CONUS operations that support VIP missions for the U.S. Secret Service, State Department, and other Federal agencies. Implements orders, policies and procedures.

b. Qualifications for initial award of MOS.

Explosive ordnance disposal specialists must possess the additional following qualifications:

(1) A physical demands rating of very heavy.
(2) A physical profile of 111121.
(3) Normal color vision.
(4) A minimum score of 105 in aptitude area GM.
(5) A final security clearance of SECRET.
(6) Eligibility for assignment to a critical nuclear duty position.
(7) Eligibility for assignment to a Category II Presidential Support position per AR 380-67.
(8) Mandatory formal training. The following training must be completed prior to award of MOS 55D.

(a) Non-prior service soldiers must complete the MOS 55B course and successfully complete the MOS 55D training.

(b) In-service soldiers, with and MOS, may attend the explosive ordnance disposal specialist course and must complete all phases of training. Attendance of MOS 55B course is not required.

(9) Be an explosive ordnance disposal duty volunteer.
(10) Be non-allergic to explosives.
(11) Be able to wear M3 type protective clothing while performing mission related functions.
(12) Be a U.S. citizen.
(13) Must possess a valid state motor vehicle operator license.

c. Additional skill identifiers.

(1) J5-Technical Escorting.
(2) P5-Master Fitness Trainer.
(3) 2S-Battle Staff Operations (skill level 3 and above).
(4) 4A-Reclassification Training.

d. Physical requirements and standards of grade.
